George Steinbrenner promised Virginia Tech that the New York Yankees would play an exhibition game at the school and he will make good on his promise today. He has also promised $1 million to the Virginia Tech Hokie Spirit Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. The Hokies will play a 7 inning game against the Yankees at English Field and will have their best players in their lineup participating. Among the players will be Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada and others. The Yankees-Hokies baseball game will be at 1pm Eastern. Louisville Slugger supplied the university with wooden bats and Major League Baseballs.
The Yankees will wear special maroon and orange "NY" caps with Virginia Tech logo on each side. They will wear their regular blue-colored caps during the regular game with a VT logo on the side. All of this headgear will be auctioned for charity.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi says he has been looking forward to the game and hopes his players will be able to absorb a deeper meaning from the baseball game after returning to Spring Training Tuesday evening.
Derek Jeter states, "All the players are looking forward to it. Some guys that aren't going wish they could go. I think we are going to enjoy it." The game will be free on mlbtv.com
