The New York Yankees signing Richie Sexson must have been low risk, high reward deal. Sexson is a decent batter against left-handed pitchers and this will help them in certain situations. The New York Yankees are in serious need for offensive player help.
Sexson had a .523 OPS with the Seattle Mariners and a .875 OPS on the road, but he is still the same player who hit .205 a year ago. Hideki Matsui could be out for a long time, so the team needs a DH. There will be a temptation for Manager Joe Girardi to use him at first and shift Giambi to DH, but that probably isn’t a good idea.
Another plan would be to use Johnny Damon as the DH while his shoulder returns 100%, but then there would be 2 weaker bats in the lineup everyday with Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera. The answer is another batter.
Barry Bonds is becoming more and more attractive. If the New York Yankees fail to trade Raul Ibanez, who other teams also want, then Bonds may be their only choice. Time will tell.
